STX/Saxitoxin是已知毒性的海洋生物毒素之一,为贝类神经(Paralytic shellis poison,PSP)的主要毒素之一，是从海洋甲藻Alexandrium tamarense中分离出的神经毒素。它是一种选择性钠通道阻滞剂。的医学重要性与贝类中的赤潮有关，并导致麻痹性贝类中毒（PSP）。钠通道的阻塞会产生弛缓性麻痹，使受害者在症状进展期间保持冷静和清醒，死于呼吸衰竭。STX/Saxitoxin一直是细胞研究中描述钠通道功能的重要工具。

世界各地都有包括在内的性贝类毒素分布,尤其是欧洲及北美一些国家。在世界各地水体中检测到毒素及报道较多,中国东南沿海一带地区也经常发生食用有毒蛤类、螺类、贝类引发人中毒事件。STX/Saxitoxin通过非传统的(非滤食性生物)载体而引起人中毒现象已经得到证实,包括腹足动物、食肉动物、草食动物、甲壳类、鱼类等,监控和管理这些非传统载体,对STX/Saxitoxin的研究具有重大意义。
